Army Corps of Engineers announces Areawide EIS for phosphate mining in the Central Florida Phosphate District

April 26, 2013 – The Jacksonville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announces the availability of the final Areawide Environmental Impact Statement (AEIS) for phosphate mining in the Central Florida Phosphate District. The Notice of Availability was published on May 3, 2013, which provides a 30-day public review and comment period. Three mine proposals from Mosaic Fertilizer LLC and one project from CF Industries in Hardee, Hillsborough, Manatee, Polk, and Desoto counties were considered in the AEIS. The document will provide support for decision making on the existing permit applications being reviewed by the Corps under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, as well as mining applications in the future within the Central Florida Phosphate District. The Corps analysis revealed that significant potential cumulative impacts could occur to surface water resources, groundwater resources, surface water quality, and ecological resources without mitigation. It was determined that with mitigation impacts to these resources would be appreciably reduced and not significant.
